List.ly: The Fun and Useful List Tool
Categories: Blog, Social Media
I admit – lists are not my “thing”
I think of to-do lists I never tackle, shopping lists…. But then there is all that advice telling me to write list posts because blog readers love them. I finally found a tool that makes lists more fun – mainly because it makes them share-able and I can let others take part and curate.
Many of you will be pleased to note that you can log into listly with your Twitter or Facebook accounts (no nasty permissions).
Once you click the big “Start a List” button on the first page you see a pop-up window to set up your list.
The form used to set up your list is very straightforward. You can make any type of list – I usally make lists of blog posts or web tools but it could be a project list or a collection of quotes…. anything really.
What makes this so much fun is the different ways you can sort your list:
Crowd Rank is my favourite! Your friends can vote list items up and down, so the list constantly changes – an amazing tool for polling your readers’ opinions.
Curated Order lets you place the list items in the order of importance.
All that is left is choosing a title image if you like and create your list.
To add items you select the pink “Add to List” button and another pop-up window appears
If you enter a link into the field, Listly suggests a thumbnail image from that page
If you type in an item without a link Listly mysteriously comes up with an image suggestion – you can always change this image later.
When you are browsing all the many Listly lists you can discover and vote on items. You can comment on interesting listings and you can embed the lists into your own blog.
Because list.ly is a product of the Social Media guys @nickkellet and @shyamster the site makes it really easy to share your new creation on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+
Do you have a WordPress blog? Check out the cool Plugin that lets you either create a list right in your blog or use one that you or someone else has created. All that is required is selecting a ShortCode and your list is automatically embedded into your post
[ listly id="1DD" theme="light" layout="full" numbered="yes" image="yes" items="all" ]
I’m working on a screen-cast explaining this further – stay tuned
Imagine what an ever-changing blog post does to your SEO (Search Engine Optimization)! Nick explains how that works in the List.ly blog:
White Hat SEO or Black Hat SEO? Are you embracing Penguin & Panda?
One of the Co-founders of Listly, Nick Kellet talked to me about some of the new features for list.ly coming very soon.

Over the last couple of years I have enjoyed Frithjof’s helpful hints about the effective use of Social Media tools and was constantly impressed with his ability to create effective and engaging communication content.
For this year’s re-election campaign I asked him to help with my digital media strategy and execution. With short notice he designed and implemented an effective strategy, integrating several social media platforms and creating a brand new website.
Frithjof successfully dealt with the particular branding rules of our party and Elections BC as well as creating content that was designed to appeal to a wide ranging audience. Frithjof and his team tirelessly created engaging content including text updates and video features and also did real time reporting of events.
Frithjof is very responsive and able to communicate in a variety of ways so I could always rely on the timely publication of important content during a busy campaign.
I am looking forward to continuing to work with Frithjof as a digital media strategy advisor on my communications team.
